A2Z² is the second acclaimed release from a quintet with a pedigree that gives them supergroup status, but whose commitment to the band and the music is fresh and powerful. The name of the band came courtesy of Alder – A-Z = Alder thru Zonder – and it fit right in. Mark Zonder, renowned former Fates Warning and Warlord drummer, started working on material in early 2020, having a very clear vision for the band he wanted to put together. “I was thinking of beer commercials, car commercials and Cobra Kai. I wanted to have a very accessible band that would appeal to the masses and lead to the ability to tour bigger venues and build a second and third record on the success of the first. The result was A-Z, which reunited him with Fates Warning vocalist Ray Alder and Warlord/Steve Vai/Ring of Fire bassist Philip Bynoe (a three-time Grammy nominee). For the artwork, they turned to the famous Hugh Syme (Rush, Fates Warning), who delivered the vivid image of a zebra eating an apple, slyly encapsulating the band name.
